Sweet Words

I’m sorely behind on updates about our NICU journey. Speaking of sore, my recovery has been more challenging after an emergency C-section. It’s been a roller coaster for sure and I hope to catch up at some point. I’ve got some great stories in the hopper.

But today I received fantastic news when I walked into the NICU.

The cardiology team rounded this morning and told our nurse to begin treating Becky like a normal baby. A normal baby! When Eileen told me, I cried and we hugged. So non-Covid. It was such a great moment.

What does a normal baby in the very non-normal ICU look like?

Normal babies wear funny hats designed by their nurses. Normal babies wear little white shirts and are swaddled in blankets. Normal babies can begin being fed by their mom. Normal babies get sponge baths on Friday nights (no pictures because I was too busy applying delicious pink lotion on every spot of open skin I could find).

Normal babies don’t need cardiac or abdominal surgery before going home from the hospital. Becky still has cardiac issues but these will be addressed in the weeks and months to come. Her abdominal situation appears normal and food is flowing from top to bottom. Literally.

Becky still has work to do. They will try to wean her off oxygen before going home. We need to establish good feeding patterns. But Rauch children could go professional in the eating arena so let’s hope Becky is like her siblings. A best guess estimate in that we may be able to take her home in about one week. In a car seat. Like a normal baby.

One more thing. Normal babies make fall crafts with their nurse.

Normal. What a sweet word!
