Worse Than a Nightmare

My children have been experiencing vivid dreams recently.

Today was Johnny’s turn.

I sensed a presence in the room in the wee hours of the morning. It was Johnny. He whispered that he had a nightmare and was scared. He scampered into our bed and snuggled up to me. He told me it was an awful dream and he didn’t want to talk about it. I reassured him that he was safe and that the nightmare was all over.

He settled down and I hoped we could snatch a bit more sleep. For several moments he was quiet and I began to drift off. But he had a sudden thought and perked up.

Johnny: “Mom, it’s the weekend. Right?”

Me: “No, Johnny, it’s Thursday.”

Johnny: “Is Thursday the weekend?

Me: “No. But it’s getting closer.”

Johnny: “You mean I have to go to school today?”

Me: “Yes.”

Johnny: “But they told us we had a short week and didn’t have to go every day.”

Me: “Well, that’s true. You have Friday off of school. But you go to Kindergarten today.”

He stretched out his arms and legs like a starfish, making all of his limbs totally rigid. He arched his back and groaned as if in total agony. Exasperated, he cried out,

“Mom, this is worse than the nightmare!”

Poor little soul. We really must spend some time on the days of the week.

  1. That’s really funny. Becca has had a similar response. This week she started in-person school. On Wednesday morning (after she had gone to in-person school only twice), she said she wasn’t going that morning as she had gone so long that she needed a break. It’s going to be a long 12+ years if you need a break this soon.

  2. While I hate to let your boys know this, I am pretty sure that this baby is going to be another girl. So will they consider that worse than a nightmare?
